OHSAA State Wrestling Champions Crowned

Story written by Tim Whelan

COLUMBUS, OHIO – On the final night of the 2017 State Finals. Wrestling season has come to a close and we have some champions I’d like to point.

First up, Division I. Freshman Julian Tagg (106 lbs.) of Brecksville-Broadview Heights. Tagg seek and claimed his first state title in his high school career. An impressive victory over Zach Shupp. A Junior from Fairfield. Tagg won his match 5-1. In his road to glory, he had one tech. fall, and a pin that got him to the Semi-Finals.

Next up, Junior Matt Fields (126 lbs.) of Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit. Matt allowed a total of eight points the who tournament. Matt won his finals match 4-0 over Jamien Hood. A Senior from Mason.

To wrap up Division I, Senior Nick Kiussis (160 lbs.) from Brunswick. Nick won his match 10-3 over Brendan Price. A Senior from Elyria. Nick was on cruise control from beginning to end. Allowing only seven points.

We now jump over to Division II. Where we will acknowledge two St. Paris Graham Local wrestlers. First up, Junior Mitch Moore (132 lbs.). Mitch is now a 3-time state champion. As I said earlier today, Mitch took on Ben Pusiuk. Senior from Carollton. Why it was a very tough match between the two, Mitch came out on top 2-0.

Next up, Junior Rocky Jordan (152 lbs.) from St. Paris Graham Local. For Rocky, he won his match against Sid Ohl. A Senior from Ashland. Rocky Claimed his second state title as he won 8-0. A decisive win to say the least.

To wrap it up, We go to Division III. Where we now have a 4-time state champion heading to Ohio State University next year. His name is Kaleb Romero (170 lbs.) from Mechanicsburg. Kaleb won his final high school match in style. Pinning his opponent in the first period. He faced Brett Vonderwell. A senior from Delphons St. John’s. Kaleb receive a stand ovation. Or as Austin Carr Color Commentator for the Cleveland Cavaliers would say a “Stand O”! Kaleb saluted the crowd with spelling O-H to the mostly a Buckeye faithful. Get ready Buckeye Nation, we’ve got a potential amazing wrestler coming our way again.

Team winners:

Division I: Lakewood St. Edwards with 151.0 points

Division II: St. Paris Graham Local with 232.5 points

DivisIon III: Mechanicsburg with 118.5 points

Preview OHSAA State Wrestling Finals

Story written by Tim Whelan—

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Wrestling is coming to a closed. It’s been another exciting year of wrestling. But now is the time, State Finals time. For the very lucky wrestler’s will be crown champion tonight.

Starting with Division one, in the 113-weight class Senior Braken Mead from Liberty vs Freshman Bryce Hepner from Lakewood St. Edwards. This should be a very exciting and heart stopping matchup. I expect this match to be low scoring tonight. Though I originally thought this could be a high scoring match.

The big story headline tonight will be; Can the Freshman beat the Senior? Only time will tell.
We skip ahead now to the 132-weight class in Division one. Zackary Donathan from Mason vs Allan Hart, a returning state champion of Lakewood St. Edwards. St. Eds has continue its dominants once again this year. I have Allan Hart as the close favorite for this matchup.

In the 160-weight class for Division one, Senior Nick Kiussis from Brunswick will wrestle Brendan Price, Senior from Elyira. This should be a spectacular match. Senior vs Senior. Who will end their career on top? This will be more a defensive match. Whoever gets the first takedown could very well win this match.

Let’s skip ahead to the 132-weight class of Division two. Where Junior Mitch Moore of St. Paris Graham Local vs Ben Pasiuk, Sophomore of Carrollton. Mitch is seeking his third straight state title. This is a match I expect Mitch Moore to control and win lopsidedly. Mitch has a phenomenal tournament and should have no problem tonight.

At the 152 weight-class in Division two, undefeated Junior Rocky Jordan of St. Paris Graham will be facing Sid Ohl, a Senior from Ashland. There might be some pressure involved in this one. Not because of the obvious that it is the finals. But because for Jordan this is about continuing the family legacy.

We end the preview with Division three 170-weight class. Senior Kaleb Romero of Mechanicsburg, against Senior Brett Vonderwell from Delphos St. John’s. Why is this a match to keep an eye. Kaleb will be wrestling for his fourth straight title. Looking to conclude his career as a four time state champion in Division three wrestling.

Updated team standings:

Division One: Lakewood St. Edwards with 143.0 points. Followed by Elyria (113.5), Liberty (112.0), Wadsworth, and Brecksville-Broadview Heights.

Division Two: St. Paris Graham Local with 205.5 points. Followed Canfield (81.0), Wauseon, Cuyahoga Falls CVCA, and Carollton.

Division Three: Mechanicsburg with 104.5 points. Followed by Oak Harbor (83.0), Genoa Area, Rootstown, and Milan Edison.
Tonight’s Finals begin at 5:30 pm.

Recap: Wrestling State Championships Round 2

Story written by Tim Whelan –

COLUMBUS, OHIO – On a cold sunny day in the heart of Ohio, round two was a very entertaining beginning to the day. With semi-finals, later tonight, wrestling matches on intensifies to near max levels for all coaches and wrestlers.

With some crazy matches happening today, we get started with Division three big winner Kaleb Romero (170 lb), Senior, of Mechanicsburg. Kaleb won his match by tech. fall 21-6. Kaleb is a three-time state champion seeking to become one of the most elite clubs in all of wrestling, a four-time state champion. Kaleb will be wrestling later tonight again Chris Langguth (170 lb), Sophomore from Rootstown.

Another big winner in Division three is returning state champion Ben Sullivan (220 lb), Senior from New Paris National Trail. Ben won his match by a 10-1 victory. Ben is currently seeking his second state title. Ben will be facing Caide Bunfill (220 lb), Senior from Barnesville.

This Semi-final match up should be a good one. Both tough wrestlers from the top. Caide won his last match of 14-2. I’d expect this semi-final match to be a low scoring match up. Why? Both wrestlers have good defense and can score from angles when you think they have a disadvantage.

Division two pretty much went as expected. Both Wrestlers I mentioned in last nights story won. Those wrestlers being Juniors Mitch Moore (132 lb), and Rocky Jordan (152 lb) from St. Paris Graham Local. Mitch Moore got a quick pin against his opponent. Rocky Jordan had steller win by a tech. fall score of 14-0.

Mitch Moore will be wrestling Hunter Yackee, a Junior from Mansfield. Rocky Jordan will be facing Nick Vespucci, a Senior from Crestwood.

For Division one, the big winners are Brendon Fenton (120 lb), Junior of Elyria. Brendon won his match 9-1 in a very tough match against Brunswick’s Logan Heil, Sophomore. Up next for Brendon, Gus Sutton, Sophomore of Austintown-Fitch.

Updated team Scores:

Division I: Lakewood St. Edwards with 64.0 points. Followed by Wadsworth, Elyria, Liberty, Cincinnati Elder.

Division II: St. Paris Graham Local with 91.5 points. Followed by Wauseon, Canfield, Cuyahoga Falls CVCA, Steubenville.

Division III: Mechanicsburg with 49.5 points. Followed by Oak Harbor, Rootstown, Genoa Area, Milan Edison.

OHSAA State Wrestling Round 1 Recap

Story Written by Tim Whelan

COLUMBUS, OHIO – As winter is ending, it’s that time of year again. Wrestling Championship season is back. With State finals now underway, we will soon find out who the real champions are of 2017.

Division One big winner of the day are Kyle Lawson senior out of Liberty high school. Kyle is a three-time state champion. I’d recommend him to Ohio State. He won his first-round match by pin.

Another winner to keep an eye on that’s due for a state title, Aaron Naples Senior out of Brunswick. Aaron is very tough on the top. Winning his match 15-0 says it all. Barring an injury, like last season, Aaron is due to claim his first State title as a Senior.

Returning State Champion Jaden Mottox undefeated Junior out of Grove City Central Crossing, won his match via pin. Jaden is seeking his second state title.

Division Two big winner is Rocky Jordan undefeated Junior out of St. Paris Graham local, won his match tech fall (15-0).  He is currently seeking his second state title. You may be familiar with the last name Jordan. Well known wrestling family. His Brother Bo and Micah Jordan wrestle at Ohio State. Let’s just say Ohio State could have their eyes on another Jordan.

Let’s talk about another St. Paris Graham wrestler, Mitch Moore. Who is also a junior, a two-time state champion pin his way to the second round as well. Mitch is currently seeking his straight state title.

Updated team standings:

Division I: Lakewood St. Edwards with 32.0 points. Cincinnati Elder, Elyria, Liberty, Wadsworth rounds out the top 5.
