Cole Guides Hudson to Baron Cup I Semi-Finals, Explorers beat Midview 3-2

Brooklyn, Ohio – It was a packed house inside the John M. Coyne Center for the ice battle between the 8-2-0 Hudson Explorers and the 7-3-0 Midview Middies. As you look on the ice, the Midview Middies rocked the white and blue jerseys with black shells while Hudson Explorers hit the ice with navy and blues with black shells.

All players put their emotions onto the ice as it was a physical matchup all three periods as the Hudson Explorers win a close one against the Midview Middies with the final score of 3-2 victory.

Hudson started of red hot and hit their first goal at the 4:45 mark from senior Chandler Koysous to give his team a 1-0 lead early in the first period. Two minutes into the second period, Middies Kyle Nagel hits his second goal of the season to make it 1-1. Shortly after, the Explorers explored Midviews’ zone and hit  a shot to move into the lead after sophomore defensemen Blake Lori hit his first goal of his career in the GCHSHL league to make it a 2-1 game for the Hudson Explorers.

Nearly five minutes in the final period, Robbie Rodgers of Midview hits the back of the net to make it a tied up game at 2-2, but seconds later Max Cole hits a short handed goal to put the Explorers back on top 3 to 2.

Hudson moves on in the Baron Cup to verse number one rank Shaker Heights.

Red Raiders Tame Mustangs as Shaker Heights Moves on in the Baron Cup I

Brooklyn, Ohio – A top seeded Shaker Heights Red Raiders (10-1-1) team came into the John M. Coyne Center to take on the eight seed Strongsville Mustangs (4-9-1).

After a hard fought battle in the first period, The Red Raiders found the goal 5 times to defeat the Strongsville Mustangs 5-2. The Red Raiders were wearing white with a red accent with red shells while Strongsville Mustangs were rocking green jerseys with black shells.

With a very fast and physical game between both teams in the first period, but you had to wait until a goal in the second period until either team put the puck in the back of the net.

The first goal of the night came from a Wyatt Eisen goal 10:27 to go into the second period. The senior defensman’s teammate Brent Anderson put a goal of his own to make it a quick 2-0 lead in favor of the  Raiders. Shaker Heights were on fire in the second period and showed it after scoring their third unanswered goal in this Baron Cup matchup from a goal by Evan Grossman – McKee at the 11:35 mark in the middle period to make it 3-0 with a Red Raider lead.

Early in the third period, Brent Anderson landed his second goal of the night to extend the lead to make it 4-0. Senior Captain Bryce Born ends the cold streak for the Strongsville Mustangs after squeezing  in a goal to make a 4 to 1 lead for Shaker Heights. Wyatt Eisen hit his second goal of the night off of a power play to extend the lead to 5-1. A late period goal by Kyle Mattson of Strongsville made it a 5-2 lead for Shaker Heights. After his goal, Kyle Mattson got upset after a penalty and got a game misconduct and they sent him to the showers with a minute to go in the game.

Shaker Heights will move on in the Baron Cup and look to verse the winner of Midview and Hudson.

Lions Slash Benedictine 6-2, As NDCL Moves On To The Baron Cup II Semifinals

Brooklyn, Ohio – In a high-energy, fast-paced game NDCL scored 6 against Benedictine’s 2 to let the Lions move on in the 2017 Baron Cup. Both teams were determined and wanted this win but NDCL found the net easier than Benedictine.

With NDCL’s Ryan MacDonald and Trent Antczak both hitting two goals and dominant defense by the Lions, Benedictine couldn’t match. Connor Zoul and C.J Natale both got 1 goal to help push the Lions to a bigger margin, yet Matt Carson was the flame that kept the Bengals on the board by scoring the only two goals of the game.

NDCL won the game 6-2 to move onto in the Baron Cup and will move on to verse the Avon Eagles.

Chagrin Falls Tigers Maul Orange Lions In Baron Cup II Quarterfinal, 5-2

Brooklyn, Ohio – Chagrin Falls Tigers (9-0-1) went up against the Orange Lions (5-5-0) for the semifinals for Baron Cup II. Colors collided as both teams fought early and fast. Despite all their efforts, the Lions fall prey to the Tigers 5-2

Orange got out first thanks to Kyle Hadden getting the Lions on the board first with 8:48 to make it 1-0 but Chagrin bounced back by matching goals and tying it 1-1 before the first period ended.

When the second period rolled around, both teams were giving their all but Chagrin Falls came up on top by scoring two goals in the middle period, both by Matt McCuskey, a sophomore that now has 8 points on the season.

The Tigers start off the third period very quick by answering with their 4th goal of the night from Tommy Mallat who got his 19th goal of the season. Orange ends the cold streak by answering back at the 8:53 mark with a goal by Scott Hill to make it a 4-2 game.

Late in the game, Chagrin Falls sealed the deal with a late second goal to move on in the Baron Cup with a win 5-2 over the Orange Lions

First Seed Avon Eagles Soar To 4-2 Victory Over Bay In Baron Cup II Semi-Finals

Brooklyn, Ohio – The Avon Eagles (10-0-0) went up against the Bay Rockets (5-5-0) for the first round of the Baron Cup Quarterfinal II. As the players skated on the ice, Avon Eagles are rocking the white/purple and the Bay Rockets rocked the very patriotic red/white/blue. Avon defeated Bay 4-2 to move onto the winner of the NDCL or Benedictine.

Early in the first period, both teams were physical and fast pace but Avon took an early lead from a shot by Shane Doherty with 5:21 to play in the first period with the help of his teammate Zach Zweircki that helped them take a 1-0 lead.

The second period was a hard-hitting battle between both teams. Bay Rockets bounced back and tied the game with 5:30 left due to a goal from Jake Gaudino and assist from Will Kenney to make it 1-1. Avon would answer back with two consecutive goals from Ian Darbe and Will Kenney respectively.

The final period started and Avon started off hot with a goal by Jake Gaudino at the 12:56 mark to slim the lead down to a 3-2 lead by the Avon Eagles. Avon matched Bay’s goal by getting a goal to extend the lead to 4-2 with 8:42 to go in the battle to move on in the Baron Cup.

2017-18 OHSAA Football Championship Returns To Canton Football Hall Of Fame

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The OHSAA announced yesterday that the Ohio High School Athletic Association StateFootball Championship will be moving back to Canton at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. After Thursday’s 9-0 vote the tentative agreement to return to Canton was solidified. The seven games will be played at the new facility in Canton.

The games were played in Canton for twenty-four years in Stark County from 1990-2013. The last three championships (2014, 2015 and 2016) were played at Ohio Stadium allowing for the renovations to take place at the Canton facility.

“When we first secured the state championships in 1990, we assured the OHSAA that Stark County would produce what would ultimately become the gold standard for high school football,” President & CEO Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Dennis Saunier said. “For the nearly a quarter century, players, coaches, students and fans experienced a well organized community that embraced the spirit of high school excellence.
“With completion of Tom Benson Stadium and the building of Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village, the experience will be the best in the nation. Welcome home OHSAA.”
