Preview: Browns vs Giants

Story written by Tim Whelan —

The Browns are coming off a 20-14 victory over the New Orleans Saints thanks to the heroics of rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer. Although wins don’t count for anything in the preseason. It is still does have an impact on the Browns. Hue Jackson is trying to change the culture in Berea. Every little win matters to the Browns.

What to look for…

The obvious battle for the Browns is quarterback competition per usual. New year, same competition. The Browns will trot out Brock Osweiler to start the game. He will be looking to end the debate of who should start week 1 vs the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rookie DeShone Kizer, and second year quarterback Cody Kessler are also in the competition. Though Brock Osweiler, and DeShone Kizer have the upper hand in the competition.

DeShone Kizer is keeping the competition close. Kizer showed poised, good pocket presence, big arm strength, willing to take big chances. Kizer threw 2 bombs including a 45 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jordan Payton that won them the game.

Final quarterback numbers from preseason week 1:

DeShone Kizer 11/18 completions, 184 yards, 1 touchdown, 114.1 rating

Cody Kessler 5/10 completions, 47 yards, 63.3 rating

Brock Osweiler 6/14 completions, 42 yards, 50.3

Another position battle to keep up on is the right tackle position. It seems as though second year lineman Shon Coleman has the upper hand. Former first round draft pick Cameron Erving has been struggling. The Browns have tried him at every position but nothing changed. Cameron Erving could be on his way out of Cleveland. Struggling in practice, getting beat off the snap right away, the false start penalties continuing to add up.

Whose Out

Danny Shelton NT, knee

Joel Bitonio Guard, knee

Cameron Erving OL, calf

The Browns will be taking on the New York Giants at First Energy Stadium on Monday Night Football, Kickoff is 8 pm, on ESPN.

Browns Draft Recap: 2017 NFL Draft

Story written by Tim Whelan:

BRUNSWICK, OHIO — 2017 NFL Draft has finally ended. Another year of new, fresh blood in Berea. The Cleveland Browns now look forward to OTA’s and training camp. Here are the Draft results for your 2017 Cleveland Browns Draft class:

ROUND 1:

Myles Garrett, Texas A&M, DE, No. 1 overall

Jabrill Peppers, Michigan, Hybrid Safety/LB, No. 25 overall

David Njoku, Miami, TE, No. 29 overall

ROUND 2:

DeShone Kizer, Notre Dame, QB, No. 52 overall

ROUND 3:

Larry Ogunjobi, North Caroline Central, DT, No. 65 overall

ROUND 4:

Howard Wilson, Houston, CB, No. 126 overall

ROUND 6:

Caleb Brantley, Florida, DT, No. 185 overall

ROUND 7:

Zane Gonzales, Arizona State, Kicker, No. 224 overall

Matthew Dayes, N.C. State, RB, No. 252 overall

The Browns finish the day with 10 draft picks. After starting the draft with 11. Trading up and down, picking their spots, finding value. That seemed to be Browns main focus. Be aggressive when needed, and sticking to their board throughout the draft.

A NO BRAINER

Reports describe the Browns as “split” on who to take with the No. 1 overall draft pick. The Browns made the correct, decisive decision to take Myles Garrett. The stud, athlete, clear choice for the No. 1 pick.

THE QUARTERBACK SITUATION…

Going into this draft the Browns were linked to several quarterbacks. The list starting with Mentor Native Mitchell Trubisky. Followed by Patrick Mahomes, DeShaun Watson, who was in consideration to be the No. 1 draft choice at point in the offseason. Also linked to players like David Webb, Joshua Dobbs, DeShone Kizer, the Toledo Native. The Browns made their choice. Instead of reaching for a quarterback. The Browns let QB come to them in second round. Deciding to pick Deshone Kizer with 52nd overall pick.

The Browns were very high on Mahomes, if KC did not move up in the draft, the Browns have taken him with the 12th overall draft pick.

WHO WILL BE THE STARTING QUARTERBACK…

Interesting enough, it’s now a full-blown quarterback competition in Berea. With Cody Kessler, Brock Osweiler, DeShone Kizer, all competing for the starting quarterback job.

SUPRISING PICK…

Maybe the most surprising, yet controversial pick was the selection of DT Caleb Brantley. Who is currently under investigation for domestic violence. Sashi Brown has made it clear. They will continue to investigate and “are prepared” to cut Brantley if more evidence show up from the case.

FINAL THOUGHTS…

The Browns overall had a very good draft class. One that can change the culture in this organization for a very long time. The Browns may have also found their answer at quarterback with the draft selection of DeShone Kizer.

The Browns missed out on some players in this draft. More specifically at safety, wide receiver, linebacker. Trading down from the No. 12 overall draft cost the Browns an opportunity to draft the likes of Malik Hooker, O.J. Howard, and several other players that were available at that time.

Johnny Manziel Signs Autographs For Fans At Mall In Texas

KATY, Texas – Johnny Football continues on his road to recovery and finds himself signing autographs for an hour and a half at a local mall sports memorabilia store.

This is his second autograph session, the first coming during Super Bowl weekend.

Fans and jokers alike joined the former Cleveland Brown as he signed over 150 autographs and sold professional photographs for $99 as he shook hands as well as took pictures with fans.

Texas A&M Alumni appeared to give him support as he has made it evident that he is trying to clean up his life in hopes of repairing his reputation and possibly, one day return to the NFL.

Spectators were the only ones able to speak with Manziel, as he declined to comment to media personnel. Read the entire article as reported by ESPN from Thursday’s event here and see the video.

Pranksters even took pictures with him posing in their favorite Johnny Football moments from 2016.

The Scooby-Doo costume and the ridiculous stack of cash from a night at the casino before his last trip to Las Vegas where he was seen rolling them up…

I bet after signing all of those footballs, helnets and jerseys, he still had a stack of money similar to this upon leaving, but I bet you he remembers it this time and his eyes are open in more than one way.

Continued wishes for good luck on his journey into sobriety, which he says he has accomplished without professional help. As I alluded to in my last article about Johnny, he wants to thank all of the people who helped get back to where he is today.
